Die "grösseren" Stücke des Naturgoldes werden Nuggets genannt. Gross ist relativ; deshalb spricht man im Volksmund bereits bei einem Stückgewicht von 0,5 g von einem Nugget.
Kleinere Goldstücke werden als Goldflitter bezeichnet und bei noch kleineren spricht man von Goldstaub.
Ein Teil des Goldstaubes wird schliesslich so klein zermahlen, dass er nicht einmal von blossem Auge erkannt werden kann. Ein grosser Teil dieses unsichtbaren Goldes wird von den Flüssen ins Meer getragen. Das Gesamtgewicht dieses mikroskopisch kleinen Goldes, das sich in den Ozeanen der Welt befindet, wird auf 27,5 Millionen Tonnen geschätzt.
A gold nugget is a naturally occurring piece of native gold. In general it's the "bigger" pieces of native gold that are called Nuggets. Since big is relative people usually regard a piece of about 0.5 gram as a nugget or when someone drops the piece of gold onto a hard surface and a sound can be heard from the drop.
Smaller pieces of gold are called Gold Flakes and even finer gold is called Gold Dust.
Watercourses often concentrate the nuggets and they are recovered by placer mining, but they may also be found in residual deposits where the gold-bearing veins or lodes have decayed. Nuggets are also found in the tailings piles of previous mining operations, especially those left by gold mining dredges.
